Solvang to Santa Barbara - Day 5

 image

In the Lynn made us a great breakfast prior to our depart for Santa Barbara’s Goleta Airport. The ride to Goleta Airport was 40 miles about of them half on US 101, which has a wide shoulder. The 101 traffic was lighter than we had expected but it was Saturday morning. At Goleta Airport we picked up a rental car to drive back to Monterey.

This was a spectacular five day ride of 265 miles. We averaged about 13 miles an hour for the trip. Which isn't bad considering climbing with the BOB trailer. The scenery was superb and the opportunity to ride with Tom and Margaret again was a wonderful experience. This was one of those great bicycling adventures, that we wouldn’t mind doing again.

If you consider doing this trip sometime keep October in mind. Pacific Coast Highway has some narrow shoulders and can have heavy car traffic during summer months. October is cooler so expect to ride in tights and light jacket for at least part of the day. Consider riding north to south due to northerly coastal winds. The Monterey County segment is quite hilly.
