The Canandaigua, Hammondsport and Watkins Glen Splashfest for TAR 2004

A Finger Lakes Poem

By now it’s clear we’ve all got what it takes
to enjoy a great bike trip around the Finger Lakes
Climbing ridges, crossing bridges and watching boats make rippling wakes,
catching big thrills on wet, twisty down hills and pressing our luck with our brakes.

Each day, we’d watch the weather in the morning
to see the rainy forecast for Rochester and Corning
Caroline even kept her umbrella on the bike, just to show she’s wise
But the broken clouds and blue skies turned out to be the best surprise.

Riding in the rain, it was kind of a pain
to keep the bike steady on the right side of the lane.
Our glasses were fogged, and our shoes were waterlogged
I know I couldn’t see, and drivers could not see me
Our rims were soaking wet, and our brakes wouldn’t work on a bet
But we all still had a blast, ‘cause at least we were going fast!

Rowdy, noisy happy hours and dinners with plenty of drinks,
Like at The Tavern at Hammondsport, doing “the wave” with frosty wineglass clinks.
We had a sweet red wine called “Love My Goat”
Between days of riding in rain that we thought could float a boat.

Despite the wet roads and all, the bike ended up fairly clean
After our daily rides through some of the greenest scenes we’ve every seen.
So for arranging all the fun while we’ve been together again,
We give Rich and Lindy and Bob a perfect ten!
Still, we were glad to get to stay at Watkins Glen,
where we were able to see the Tour on OLN!

We saw Dr. Frank, a fat frank, and the Frank we all know and love,
And for our Trans Am tandem family, we all thank the Lord above.

Best wishes for many miles of safe tandeming
until next year - for our 4 th annual reunion…
